Highland Pony Performance Awards 1999
The role of the Highland Pony as a truly versatile breed is valued and recognised through the Performance Awards, run by the Highland Pony Society. Points are accrued in a range of competitions and other activities, with separate awards being made for Scottish and English based ponies. A quick look at the activities of the top ponies in 1998/9 (below) shows Highlands to be active in dressage, long distance/endurance riding, show jumping, driving, WHP, hunting, side-saddle, ridden showing, hunter trials, cross country, gymkhanas and all kinds of RC events. Not bad for a breed some think of as merely a heavy, hairy pony suitable only for trekking centres and family ponies, though Highlands manage to fulfil these roles well too!
