Stud Visit - Achnacarry and Craigiebrig Studs

These pictures date from summer 1998, when the CSHPC visited Major and Mrs Connell, whose Achnacarry/Craigiebrig Stud is near Auchtermuchty, Fife. Tim and Jean each have a stud affix of their own, Tim has Craigiebrig and Jean is Achnacarry, but they work very much as a team, as you can see from this "family portrait" . They have had success in the show ring with a number of their ponies, including the 1997 Royal Highland Show where one of their yearling colts, having come second in his class, was immediately sold to the USA as a potential stud horse for breeding buckskins. He apparently arrived safely in Wyoming, along with the winner of the same class.

Having sadly lost their stallion to grass sickness a year ago, Jean and Tim had 2 young colts to bring on, Mannie of Millfield , who was bred by the nearby Millfield Stud and Tarka of Orangefield , bred by Mr McCrae. Tarka was subsequently licenced for breeding and the Connell's are expecting his first crop of foals in 2001.

One of the broodmares suffers from sweet itch, and when we visited she was testing a new fly sheet called the Boett designed to protect horses who suffer this complaint. While it seems to work well, the mare didn't appear too impressed but it caused no end of hilarity among members, along with some serious interest in the potential of the new rug for similarly afflicted ponies.

In 2001 I became better acquainted with Tim and Jean and sent Rowena over to Tarka - latest in 2002 is that she produced a cracking filly foal to him in June 2002 and is hopefully going to repeat that in 2003 as she's over there once more. I also developed a stud web site for them which went live in February 2002 - see the link from my Highland page for up to date news and details of their ponies, past and present.
