Your pictures are just lovely and when going through the text that went along with each of your horses I got a real sense of how much they mean to you. Getting back into riding again after a bit of lost confidence from a bad fall years ago, and I think that a Highland would help me to get some back. Like where you are going with your bloodlines too, was drooling over all your ponies and really liked the look of Ace and Primrose, they both look as though they know they are gorgeous! Will visit this site again and again, your hard work and love of your animals shines through! Comments: I have a yellow dun hihgland and we have been doing very well in our first year of showing. However, I heard yesterday that "weathering" in a yellow duns' mane is looked down upon and would put us further down in a line-up. Is this the case? Mine certainly has a good deal of "highlights" in his mane- it would be very difficult to disuise! Interesting question but I've never heard of weathering being considered a fault, it is quite a common feature and I wouldn't worry about it. If your pony has good conformation, temperament, schooling, manners and some "look at me" about him, he should do well. Just wondered if you knew any connemara breeders or native pony breeders for that matter in or near hertfordhire. My 14.2hh (ish, maybe a little bigger) has just been diagnosed as not being able to be ridden again although she isnt in any pain. Id rather her be a broodmare rather than a companion for the rest of her life. She's registered and has Village grey and Meryvn Kingsmill bloodlines. Id like to be able to sell/ or loan her to a loving home where she'll be happy and can have lots of babies!
Would you know of anyone who can help? Or if anyones intereded just email me for pics.
Thanx Ju Try the ECPS Secretary (link from Breed Societies page and/or the Connemara page) - they'll know who's in that area and run a sales list you could put your pony on. I'm a pony and Tennesee Walker horse enthusiast and currently live in Montana. I have a wonderful black pony. I wish I could send a video of him to an expert on pony breeds, as I am not quite sure of his breeding. He looks something like a Fell, but perhaps a little more fine boned. He is wonderful riding in the mountains, driving and horse games and a personality a bit like Lulu.
I have been discriminated against and barred against riding my pony (because of my size) (and my Tennesee Walkers, because of their gait) in the local horse show in Montana. My vet says my pony should be able to carry a rider up to 135 lbs. I weigh only 110 lbs.
However, the local show does not discriminate against 200 lbs. men riding two-year old Quarter horses in reining competition, where they are required to lope.
I need some ammo to fight the local politics of this show.
Happy Trails Pony Lovers!

Maybe you want to look at our horses at the club?? We have many horses imported from Ireland, most of them actually.Press the picture withe "Irish Horses". Press the button Hamre ridskola and then Lektionshästar or Gamla Lektionshästar and have a look.I know that many of the Swedish riding clubs import horse from England and Ireland. So maybe you´ll find something about your horse or pony...

I'm so impressed I can't breathe & get it straight! I love your website & the pictures. And appreciated your article on Keeping Natives; I'd always been told that "horses are too expensive--you either own a horse or have a life!" Seems that attitude is wrong, at least where Highlands are concerned. Thanks for an excellent website. No, they cost less but you still don't have what non-horsey people call "a life"! - the ponies soon *are* your life and I wouldn't want it any other way! I think it is very informative and interesting. If you hear of any highlands for sale, i am looking for a 2/3/4 year old top class to show, gelding. I am at the moment showing show hunter ponies but will be too old at the end of the year, so want a nice sane horse to show along side my sisters dartmoors and welsh A.I think you could do the site more justice if you advertised in schedules or the journal. I will put your address in the B.S.P.S news review next addition, as there will be some interested people, due to highlands winning Olympia, they are now very much sought after down south!
Congratulations to Claire who informs me she has agreed not one but two purchases, a 2yo grey gelding by Drambuie of Whitefield and a 3yo gelding by Sporrandene of Kildavie. Since one was in Perthshire and the other in Wales, I take my hat off to Claire for her enthusiasm and wish her luck for her future M&M showing career with these two boys. Lovely to see the snowy pictures - I have a sentimental fondness for looking at Highlands in the snow. It suits them, although it didn't suit me quite so well over the Xmas break when we had plenty fo it lying down here in Cleveland! I think I was just frustrated because I was given the all-clear to ride again on 22 December after a 3 month lay off following an operation to my right hand. Anyway, they re all looking gorgeous.

Lots of people I know keep ponies out 24/7 and some still run them on the hill which is a wonderful sight. We have just been getting some of the nasty weather that hit England the past week or two and while I decided to bring in my 20 yo arthritic mare and my new weanling filly for the night, the rest all stayed out with some hay to keep them happy and even the partbred foal is doing just fine. Humphrey is a 101% pony apart from a reluctance to hack out alone. This summer I have been determined to increase the range and distance of our solo hacks and we are managing some pretty good hour - hour and a half wlak, trot and canter rides in the woods, up the hills and across the moors. But, Humphrey being Humphrey (and a highland pony ???), there is quite a lot of stubborness to overcome and we rarely proceed anywhere in a straight line. This afternoon we got halfway round and Humphrey decied that was far enough: highspeed reverse, little rears, big bucks and a lot of foot stamping later I was beginning to wodner whose resolve actually would last longest. My policy is: okay, you won't go my way, I won't go yours so we'll just stay here.... I tried Walk on Humphrey in a firm voice, I tried a welly and the whip, I tried a "my way" that looked like an alternative. No go. Then I started to tell him what a good boy he was (not when he was in reverse/buck or rear mode!) and as he walked forward I asked for trot and then I began to sing to him: a little ditty about what a good boy Humphrey was in rhythm with the trot. And we bowled along the path I wanted, without a murmur. whether he was tryign to get away from the sound (I was requested to mime during music lessons at school..) or appreciated the praise or was simply surprised I don't know. Thanks. Hi, I emailed you info on a couple of people but beware that even dark grey shades are likely to go lighter with age and end up near white. For unusual colours like the chocolate dun you need Rhum bloodlines, which are to be found on the West coast of Scotland and in Sussex - I can give you breeder details when you're ready to look. One line of more traditional mainland ponies that may give you a colour you like is Carlung stud, whose junior stallion Brisbane Glen of Carlung is a very dark mouse grey, almost chocolatey - see the stud profile elsewhere on the site for a picture - many of his stock are stamped with that colouring and may suit you. Anyway, thanks again for a friendly site - please feel free to visit our site (always undergoing tweaks !) Hi Felicity, yes lots of stallions still run with mares, particularly in private studs but also at some of the studs who stand stallions. Aidan and Briagh were both the result of Portia running with the late McNair of Denmill, and he was down in Surrey at the time so it isn't just in Scotland! I have always looked into large, strong ponies as a riding mount. There aren't many pages on native large breeds, but this is the best! Oh, and a tip--- Highland Ponies can jump about 4 feet high with an adult on its back. And try having some information on Connamara ponies, because they are wonderful native high jumping breeds. My name is Tammy, and I happened to come across your site and I don't know if you are aware of a fantastic television show about a family of horse breeders, called Legacy, airing on Friday nights at 8:00 EST on UPN. It is a family drama set in the 1880s, that follows the lives of a family in Kentucky; a widower, his four children, and an adopted seventeen year old son.
The horses are beautiful and are frequently shown throughout the show, not to metion that the Logan family races horses in hopes to make it to the Kentucky Derby. What makes this show so different from the rest is that it is just a good, old-fashioned drama complete with passion, rivalry, love, manipulation, and most importantly, family.
This is Legacy's first season, but hopefully, not its last. But like many new shows, Legacy is in danger of not being renewed for next season. The show has a group Campaign of very loyal, dedicated fans who have started a "Keep Legacy Campaign." I am part of this effort and one of our goals is to make more people aware of this wonderful show and so we have contacted your site. Please watch Legacy this Friday night on UPN, 8:00 EST; I guarantee that once you watch it, you will be hooked. Since it is a few days away until Legacy airs, why not check out the Official Keep Legacy Campaign Site at http://www.geocities.com/~loganslegacy/keep/ or my personal site http://www.geocities.com/TelevisionCity/Stage/9510 to learn about the campaign, read about the show itself, and become familiar with the characters.

Great page, I really enjoyed it. I admire your dedication to your beloved horses!
I have a rather unusual request, which I hope you can address at some point in your very busy schedule. My daughter will be going to the UK from November/98 to April/99, where she will be working on a horse farm (an agricultural exchange). We are in a quandry over what kind of warm clothing she should bring. What do you folks wear in the winter? We come from a very dry climate (Alberta) that can be extremely cold, and dry with plenty of snow. Does she need winter boots, or would "wellies" do? What about a coat - a wax type that can be layered, or should she have an insulated coat that's waterproof? She's all set to go out and spend a fortune on Canadian-type clothing and she may stick out like a sore thumb! Should she maybe buy over there (although our dollar is absolutely worthless at this time (1.40 CAN to buy 1 US dollar!)
If you can give us ANY help it would be greatly appreciated - this is becoming a real issue at our house!
Thanking you in advance, Julie Hutchinson

I ride Highlands at Swinton, North Yorkshire and at Eston, in Cleveland. Can anyone help with two queries I have? First, getting a saddle to fit. Is there a particular make which suits the breed ? At Swinton, which is all Highland they don't have a problem, but at Eston we have had problems getting a saddle to fit our rather large example of the larger bred Highland (good job he can't read this!). Second, where's the best place to look for a 5 - 7 year old ? I had hoped to buy a horse which has been on our yard since he was 3, but he's turned out so well his curent owner wants to keep him and I'm just not up to bringing on a real baby myself. Just one question regarding your brief personal history....Buddism and Hindu? What? No Jainism? My original undergraduate degree was in Philosophy (Phenomenology to be exact) with a minor in comparative religion. Then, I made the mistake of *really* going off on a tangent and went back to school to become an architect and specialized in equestrian facility design and planning. Not exactly in great demand, but I get to ride property on one of my "ponies" and get paid for it!
And, studying Gaelic. Impressive! What form? Irish P or Q variant? Scottish? Manx?
Alright, I've had a good vist here and must say you have a great site.

I have buyers from Sweden, Norway and Finland and people are searching for good nice calm tractable, weightcarrier horses. Do you have that? Or do you know others who breed those horses? I do pick out carefully the buyers and see that they are good horsepeople and will handle the horse in a nice way. I have contact afterwards with most of my costumers. I think the Highland seems to be a good horse for us. Are you interested in a co-operation, and to deliver horses to us? Comments: Hello from an ex active Highland Pony owner...I still own Rosette of Gleneages, but she's been on loan to Jim & Lynda Sweeney now for an age, so I'm not strictly speaking still an owner! Anyway, I have fond memories of showing my two, Rosie and Kellie of Whitefield who had to be put down last year, but we had a huge amount of fun together.
Thanks for an interesting reminisce around the Turin Hill Stud, I was there when Glen Aigas was just a baby - he was steel grey then but had the magnificent prescence that he carries today.

Your homepage is very beautiful! It is fun to read about your ponies and you (I wasn't bored). The information in 'Keeping natives' is very interesting (although I don't have a pony (yet)). And the pictures of your 'Stud visites' are also very beautiful. Keep visiting (and taking pictures)!
I tried to visite the homepage of the Na Dailach Highland pony Stud, but it didn't work. Would you know, what the reason could be for that?
Lots of succes with your homepage and I'm looking forward to read more about you and your ponies. And of course I'd like to see 'More pics'!

Your homepage is looking great! I haven't looked at it for ages and there's a lot more of it now. I love your photos of the Stud Visits and of the Central Highlands Show. I don't suppose you took any of the winning yeld mare, our grey mare Calliach Bhan na Dailach, did you? If so we'd pay you for them as our own photography skills are sadly lacking . I still haven't updated my own homepage as I simply don't have time. I hope it's still interesting for newcomers though.

This was so much fun looking and reading about your ponies. I live in the USA, in Montana, in the Rocky Mountain northwest. I raise Quarter Horses so it's nice to see ponies like yours with a lot of substance. There are not many ponies here mostly horses. Quarter Horses are known mostly for racing and ranch work, but are now the biggest breed registry in the world. They are do anything horses. I love to see powerful ponies like you have shown here. I love the variety of colors also. Love your whole site! One of the best I've seen yet. Have a wonderful Christmas and New Year. Give your ponies a pat for me.
