About SOMIS
Quick Introduction
What is SOMIS
SOMIS is the Secretary's Office Management Information Service. It hosts some of the Administration's web pages, which include:
Navigation on SOMIS
Here are a few quick links and on how to navigate easily around SOMIS.
- At the top of every page an Image Map providing a number of standard links to pages usefull for navigation around the entire Univeristy site. (To be implemented during Spring 1998).
- At the bottom of every page there is a footer with standard links to:
- the Home Page of the main University site;
- the Home Page of SOMIS (this server);
- one of the two search engines running on SOMIS (you can then link to the other engine);
- a Link to EMail the WebMaster, or whoever is responsible for the page;
- links to other pages depending on where you are;
- A What's new, updates and hot items can be accessed from the Home Page of SOMIS. These news relate to the server.
- There is also a news page which has material relevant to Higher Education and to the University.
- You can find information about the purpose of this site from the Home Page as well.
- Finally it may be worth having a look at the page about protection. This page can be accessed from various areas of SOMIS, it has information about protection and the
used on many of the main index pages.
Graphics
The information which has been generated and stored on SOMIS has been created with certain standards in mind.
Chiefly the graphic capabilities of the user's computer are expected to be capable of a resolution of
800 by 600 with 256 colours or better. It should be possible to run a monitor at this resolution
if it is a 15 inch model or better. Many of the newer 14 inch monitors will run at this resolution also.
Browsers
The information on SOMIS can be viewed using the earlier versions of either Netscape or Microsoft's Internet Explorer.
However, some of the features will be lost unless version 3 or better of either Netscape or Microsoft's Internet Explorer are used.
If you place pages on Somis you will need - I hope - from time to time to
edit your files and place new ones.
For those who use OS2 the connection is painless you don't need to read any further. Those unfortunate enough
to have to use Microsoft's NT will encounter pain, more pain and even more pain. Basically NT users fall into two categories,
those:
Logon to SOMIS - Intranet
Inside the Server (for geeks and techies only)
Software and hardware used to create SOMIS. Slightly out of date page will be updated sortly (28 Feb 2000).
