Lay Vacancies on the University Court
Appointment of members of Court
The Court is the governing body of the University of Dundee and has particular responsibility for the management and administration of
the University’s assets and finances and the employment of staff. It plays a crucial role in the development of the University’s
mission and in defining the strategic direction of the organisation, and it ensures effective leadership and good governance.
The Court consists of both academic members and a number of co-opted lay members. Lay membership on the Court provides a rewarding opportunity for those committed to quality and success in higher education to play an important contribution to the future development of the University and to its role regionally, nationally and internationally.
There are currently vacancies in the lay membership of the Court, and further vacancies will become available later this year, as well as on an ongoing basis thereafter. Expressions of interest are sought from individuals with experience of leadership in business, law, education, and the public sector or not-for-profit environments. The University is committed to diversity in its membership and especially welcomes applications from underrepresented groups.
The time commitment is around 15 days per year, which involves attendance at regular meetings, an annual retreat as well as other events and functions. Appointments are
considered by the Governance & Nominations Committee, which makes a
recommendation to Court, and are made initially for a four-year term. Lay members of Court are not remunerated, but may claim reimbursement for travel and other necessary expenses incurred in the fulfilment of their duties.
On these web pages, you should find additional background information on the
role and current membership of Court, on its Committees and on the governance
framework (click on the links to the left). Of these the
Handbook for Court Members will be
particularly useful; it gives a comprehensive account of the role of Court and
the expectations placed on its members, as well as of the operation of Court and
its Committees. Below you will find links to other useful resources and webpages:
The Committee of University Chairs
also produces a guide for members of higher education governing bodies. Whilst
this is in a sense quite a detailed set of guidelines and procedures, it gives
an idea of how such bodies should operate and, more importantly, how they differ
from the governing boards of private companies.
