Prizes

Note: Prizes must be taken up by 31 July of the financial year following the award; otherwise the award will lapse. In all classes in which a special prize has not been instituted the University awards a class medal to the best student in the class if considered worthy of the award. The following prizes are awarded for study in the Faculty or Faculties indicated (provided that there are candidates of sufficient merit), the awards being made annually unless otherwise indicated.

Wimberley Award

The Wimberley Award in the form of a medal may be awarded annually (by the Bursaries and Scholarships Committee) to a student who has qualified, in the year of award, for a degree or diploma of the University and who has exhibited outstanding and exemplary efforts or has made a distinguished contribution to the life of the University.

Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences

ABERTAY HISTORICAL SOCIETY PRIZES (£25 each in books) - Awarded to the best student in "The Victorian City" class in the Department of History and to the best student in the Historical Geography of Scotland option in the Department of Geography.

KATHLEEN M BELL PRIZE (£30) - Awarded for the best performance by a first year student in Economic Studies. This prize is open to students from the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, the Faculty of Life Sciences, and the Faculty of Law and Accountancy.

BOWIE MEMORIAL PRIZE (£40 in books) - Awarded to the most distinguished graduate of the academic year in any Honours group that includes Business Economics with Marketing or Economics or Financial Economics.

J B CAIRD PRIZE (£60) - Awarded annually to a student who has contributed significantly to the overall welfare of the Department of Geography.

CARLAW-MARTIN SCHOLARSHIP (about £250) - Awarded to the student who has shown the greatest distinction and is entering the final year of an Honours course in Economics and History, whom failing, the student who has shown the greatest distinction and is entering the final year of an Honours course in either Economics or History.

COULTHARD MEMORIAL PRIZE (£20 in books) - Awarded to the most distinguished student in one of the Economics classes.

DEPARTMENT OF ECONOMIC STUDIES PRIZE (£40) - Awarded at the discretion of the Head of Department to a graduating student for outstanding performance in Economic Studies.

GEORGE DUNCAN OF DRUMFORK SCHOLARSHIP (£160) - Awarded to the student with the highest aggregate mark in Third Year of BSc in Town and Regional Planning.

DUNDEE CITY COUNCIL CIVIC AWARD - Awarded to the student(s) with the highest mark(s) in Critical Planning

Agendas Practical at the discretion of Dundee City Council (BSc Town and Regional Planning).

ECOS ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT PRIZE - Awarded to the student with the highest aggregate mark in Part

IV of the BSc (Honours) Environmental Management.

EDE AND RAVENSCROFT PRIZE (£125) - Awarded to a continuing undergraduate student on the basis of exceptional academic performance at the discretion of the Dean of the Faculty.

FLADMARK PRIZE (£20) - Awarded to student with highest mark in Principles of Planning (Part IV of BSc in Town and Regional Planning).

FRENCH PRIZE (£50) - Awarded for proficiency in spoken French to the Honours student who obtains the highest marks (and a first class grade) in the Practical French 3 oral examination for the Honours MA degree.

GRAHAM & SIBBALD (£100) - Awarded to the student with the highest mark in Law & Statutory Planning Practice (Part IV of BSc in Town and Regional Planning).

GUILDRY INCORPORATION OF DUNDEE/MATTHEW TRUST SCHOLARSHIP (£1,000) - Awarded annually to enable a Part II Environmental Management student to spend a year at a North American University.

G P HENDERSON PRIZE (£40) - Awarded for the best performance by a first-year student in Philosophy.

DAVID KIRK & ASSOCIATES DEVELOPMENT STUDIES PRIZE - Awarded annually to the first year student gaining the highest aggregate mark in the Land Use and Development module.

DAVID KIRK & ASSOCIATES TOWN PLANNING PRIZE - Awarded annually to the second year student gaining the highest aggregate mark for all coursework undertaken during the year.

D F MACDONALD PRIZE (£100) - Awarded to the best student in the Department of History, which failing the Department of Economic Studies, which failing the Department of Psychology who has expressed an interest in a career in management.

W J M MACKENZIE PRIZE (£50) - Awarded to the student with the best essay and examination marks in Level 2 MA Politics.

NCR PRIZES - NCR Manufacturing of Dundee provides an annual income for the award of book prizes to students taking Levels 1-4 MA courses in Mathematics including any of the Joint Honours Degrees in Mathematics. The prizes, to the value of £30, £50 or, exceptionally, £60 in books, will be awarded by the Professors of Mathematics on the performance of students in class work and class and Degree examinations of the current academic year.

NELSON CARNE PRIZE (£60) - Awarded to the best student in Labour Economics and Applied Economics with Honours of the second Class (upper division) or better.

REG LAVILLE MEMORIAL PRIZE - Awarded annually to the final year student who submits what is judged to be the best dissertation in the Department of Psychology.

ROBERT OWEN FOUNDATION PRIZE (£50) - Awarded annually to the student with the highest mark in Natural

Resources Management 2 (BSc Environmental Management).

POLITICS PRIZE (£50) - Awarded to the Level 1 MA Politics student with the best essay and class examination marks.

POLITICS PRIZE (£50) - Awarded to the Level 2 MA Politics student with the best essay and class examination marks.

ALEX REID PRIZE (£100) - Awarded annually to the Honours Politics student who produces the best dissertation.

ROYAL SCOTTISH GEOGRAPHICAL SOCIETY MEDAL - Awarded to the best student in the Geography classes in the University.

SAM SELVON PRIZE IN ENGLISH (£20 in books) - Awarded to a final Honours student for outstanding achievement in English Studies.

SLOAN PRIZE (£25) - For the best composition in prose in the Lowland Scots vernacular by a matriculated student or graduate of the University. Compositions must be in the hands of the Secretary of the University by 1 January.

RICHARD SMITH MEMORIAL PRIZE (£75 of which £40 must be applied to the purchase of books) - For the best philosophical essay, on a topic to be chosen from alternatives prescribed by the Head of the Department of Philosophy, by a matriculated student who has not already obtained the prize. Essays must be in the hands of the Secretary of the University by 30 April.

ROGER ROSCOE MEMORIAL PRIZE (£100) - Awarded annually to the student with the second highest aggregate mark in Part III (BSc Town and Regional Planning). To be used "in pursuit of an original project related to student's studies".

RTPI PRIZE (£60) - Awarded annually to the student with the highest aggregate mark in Part IV (BSc Town and Regional Planning).

RTPI (SCOTLAND) PRIZE (£50) - Awarded annually to the student with the highest mark in Research Project (Part IV of BSc in Town and Regional Planning).

TAYSIDE REGIONAL COUNCIL PRIZE - Awarded annually to the student with the highest mark in Regional Planning (BSc Town and Regional Planning).

TOWN PLANNING PRIZE (£100) - Awarded annually to the student with highest aggregate mark in Part I (TRP).

TOWN PLANNING GRADUATE PRIZE (£50) - Awarded annually to the student with the highest aggregate mark in Part II (BSc Town and Regional Planning).

Faculty of Duncan of Jordanstone College

The following prizes and awards are awarded in the Faculty of Duncan of Jordanstone College provided that there is a candidate of sufficient merit, the awards being normally made annually.

General Course

BILL CADENHEAD PRIZE FOR PAINTING - Awarded annually to the best student of the year.

PAT HOLMES MEMORIAL PRIZE - Awarded to the student with the highest aggregate marks ( Prize is taken in the form of goods from College Shop).

CRIGHTON BEQUEST - Awarded annually to the student who has the highest aggregate marks in sessional examinations of the first year full-time course and/or for students in any printing section of the School (To be awarded to students in various branches of Printing Arts and/or for the purchase of reference books on various branches in history/practice of printing arts).

SEKALSKI PRIZE - Awarded annually to a student who has completed second, third or fourth year in Printmaking.

ALEXANDER LESLIE RUSSELL PRIZE - Awarded annually to a third or fourth year student of outstanding ability.

GEORGE DUNCAN OF DRUMFORK SCHOLARSHIP FUND - Awarded to the best student in penultimate year of course.

F & A BRADSHAW MEMORIAL PRIZE - Awarded annually to existing students on application and after interview.

GUARDBRIDGE PAPER CO PRIZE - Awarded annually to the best second year student.

STRATHEARN GALLERY PRIZES - Awarded annually to (1) best final year student in Ceramics, and (2) best final year student in Jewellery and Metalwork.

School of Fine Art

IAN EADIE AWARD - Awarded annually to a second, third or fourth year Drawing and Painting student.

JOHN MILNE PURVIS PRIZE - Awarded annually to a third or fourth year Drawing and Painting student of outstanding ability.

GEORGE DUNCAN OF DRUMFORK SCHOLARSHIP FUND - Awarded annually to the best student in penultimate year of courses in Drawing & Painting and Sculpture.

JAMES GUTHRIE ORCHAR MEMORIAL ART PRIZE SCHEME - A bursary awarded to a final year student of "School of Painting". (Note - successful entry to be exhibited in a suitable location in Broughty Ferry for one month following the award).

BERNARD COOPER MEMORIAL PRIZE - Awarded annually to the final year student who has produced the best portfolio of work in that year.

ALISTAIR SMART MEMORIAL PRIZE - Awarded annually on the recommendation of the School's Awards Committee.

FARQUHAR REID TRUST ART PRIZE - Awarded annually on the recommendation of the School's Awards Committee.

SANDRA MCNEILANCE MEMORIAL PRIZE FOR PAINTING AND DRAWING - Awarded annually to a final year student of Drawing and Painting.

GUILD BEQUEST - Awarded annually to a third year student, born of Scottish parents, preferably normally resident in Scotland, considered the most worthy and deserving student in that year.

GORDON MATTHEWSON AWARD (Statuette) - Awarded annually to the best third year student.

OVE ARUP PRIZE - Awarded annually to a final year student of outstanding ability.

THOMAS DELGATY DUNN - Rotates among Schools of Architecture, Design and Fine Art. A competition for third or fourth year students.

WILLIAM ARMSTRONG DAVIDSON PRIZE - Rotating prize between third or fourth year students in Design (Silversmithing) and Fine Art (Sculpture). Awarded to a student of outstanding ability.

LORD ARMITSTEAD TRUST PRIZE - Rotating prize among Architecture, Design, Fine Art and Television & Imaging. Awarded to the best first year student.

Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences

The following prizes are awarded annually for study in the Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences:

ADDISON-WESLEY PRIZE (£100) - Awarded to the best student in Applied Computing.

W S ATKINS PRIZE - Awarded annually, at the discretion of the Head of Division, to the student who performs best in the research project associated with the MRes in Civil Engineering.

BALFOUR BEATTY PRIZE - Awarded on the recommendation of the Head of the Division of Civil Engineering for the best performance in the third year project.

WILLIAM HENRY BROWN PRIZE (£50) - Awarded to the student who, in the opinion of the Head of the Division of Civil Engineering, is likely to become the best practising engineer.

CULLWICK PRIZE (£20) - Awarded to the most distinguished student graduating with honours in Engineering and Management.

DEWAR UNDERGRADUATE BURSARY (£80) - Awarded at the discretion of the Dean to a student having completed the first year of an engineering programme. The bursary is renewable for up to three years subject to satisfactory performance.

EDE AND RAVENSCROFT PRIZE (£125) - Awarded at the discretion of the Dean of the Faculty to a continuing undergraduate student on the basis of superior academic performance.

ENGINEERS' ASSOCIATION OF THE UNIVERSITIES OF ST ANDREWS AND DUNDEE PRIZE (£25) - Awarded to the graduating student who is adjudged to have shown the best all-round performance in University life.

FIDLER AND STEGGALL PRIZE (£20) - Awarded in alternate years for distinction in Civil or Mechanical Engineering. Next award 2004.

FIDLER AND STEGGALL PRIZE (£20) - Awarded in alternate years for distinction in Mathematics. Next award 2003.

PRINCIPAL A R FULTON PRIZE (£35) - Awarded on the recommendation of the Head of the Division of Civil Engineering to the best student in structural theory and design in the Degree course in Civil Engineering without Honours.

DR ANGUS A FULTON POSTGRADUATE PRIZE (£150) - Awarded for the best research thesis in Civil Engineering.

JOHN HARRIS PRIZE (£40) - Awarded to the third year student who secures the best marks in the class of Mechanical Engineering Design.

INSTITUTION OF CIVIL ENGINEERS PRIZE (£100) - Awarded on the recommendation of the Head of the Division of Civil Engineering, to the student in the third and honours years of Civil Engineering who is adjudged the best in academic performance.

PETER LeCOMBER MEMORIAL PRIZE (£175) - Awarded to the best Senior Honours student of Physics.

MOTT, MACDONALD PRIZE (£25) - Awarded on the recommendation of the Head of the Division of Civil Engineering, for the best project carried out by a student graduating with Honours in Civil Engineering.

NCR PRIZE (£100) - Awarded to a student who has demonstrated an outstanding performance in an Electronic or Electrical related Honours degree.

NCR PRIZES - Awarded to students taking First, Second and Third and Honours courses in Mathematics, Statistics and Applied Computing. The prizes, to the value of £30, £50 or, exceptionally, £60, in books, will be awarded by the Professors in the Division of Mathematics and the Division of Applied Computing for performance in class work and class and degree examinations of the current academic year.

COULTHARD MEMORIAL PRIZE - To be awarded annually to the most distinguished student in one of the BFin Eonomics classes.

DEAN'S MEDAL - Awarded occasionally to any student who in the Dean's opinion has exhibited outstanding and exemplary efforts in the course of his or her studies.

GEORGE R DONALD PRIZES (£100) - These prizes, to the value of £100 each, are awarded annually, on the recommendation of the Board of Examiners, to the best student in each of the classes of Scots Law and Property and the Elements of Conveyancing.

EDE AND RAVENSCROFT PRIZE (£125) - Awarded to a continuing undergraduate student in the Faculty of Law and Accountancy on the basis of superior academic performance at the discretion of the Dean of the Faculty in consultation with heads of departments.

ERNST & YOUNG PRIZES (£100) - Awarded annually to the best first, second and third year students on the BAcc degree course.

GREEN PRIZE IN LAW (books to the value of £120) - Awarded annually on the recommendation of the Board of Examiners for the LLB degree with honours to the most meritorious student in the examinations for the single honours LLB degree.

HAROLD HOW MEMORIAL AWARD (not less than £2500) - Awarded annually to the two students whose performance in their first year of the graduation course in Law is deemed by the Dean of Law and Accountancy to have been the most meritorious.

HENDERSON LOGGIE (£100) - Awarded annually to the best student on the Accountancy stream.

JULIA HUGHES PRIZE (amount varies) - Awarded annually to a third year student who has contributed significantly to the life of the Department of Accountancy and Business Finance or of the University in the third year or whose achievements have involved overcoming major personal obstacles during the course of that year.

ICAS CHARLES SCOTT PRIZE (£100) - Awarded annually to the second year student who submits the best assessed essay on an Accountancy subject.

KATHLEEN M BELL PRIZE - To be awarded annually for the best performance by a first year student in Economic Studies.

KPMG PRIZE (£250) - Awarded annually to the best Senior Honours student on the BAcc degree course.

KPMG PRIZE FOR AUDITING AND TAXATION (£150) - Awarded annually to the best Senior Honours BAcc student in Auditing and Taxation jointly.

ALASDAIR LONIE MEMORIAL PRIZE (£100) - Awarded annually to the best student in BAcc or BFin Financial Management.

FACULTY OF PROCURATORS AND SOLICITORS IN DUNDEE PRIZES (£30) - Two prizes, each to the value of £30, awarded annually to the most meritorious students in the Diploma in Legal Practice classes in Civil and Criminal Procedure and in Advocacy and Pleading.

ISOBEL McKAY PRIZE (books to the value of £15) - Awarded annually to the most distinguished student in the BAcc class in Economics.

NCR LTD PRIZES - NCR Ltd provides an annual income for the award of book prizes to students following Mathematics courses, including the first year of the BAcc degree course. The prizes, to the value of £30, £50 or exceptionally £60 in books, will be awarded by the Professors of Mathematical Sciences on the performance of students in classwork and in class and degree examinations of the current academic year.

REEVES & NEYLAN (£250) - Awarded annually to the best third year student in the professional subjects (3FA, 3FM, 3MA, 3BS).

HENRY SCRYMGEOUR PRIZE IN PUBLIC INTERNATIONAL LAW (£50) - Awarded annually to the best student in the class of Public International Law.

HENRY SCRYMGEOUR PRIZE IN LAW AND SOCIETY (£50) - Awarded annually to the best student in the class of Law and Society.

SCRYMGEOUR QUAICH - Awarded annually to the best first year Law with Languages student.

SWEET AND MAXWELL PRIZE (£150 credit for Sweet and Maxwell titles) - Awarded annually on the recommendation of the Board of Examiners to the most meritorious student in Mercantile Law.

DOUGLAS G WILSON PRIZE (£40) - Awarded annually to the student with the best aggregate marks in the prescribed subjects in the first year of the BAcc Degree.

J N YOUNG PRIZE IN CONSTITUTIONAL LAW (£30) - Awarded annually to the best student in the class of Constitutional Law.

Faculty of Life Sciences

The following prizes are awarded annually for study in the Faculty of Life Sciences:

BRITISH ASSOCIATION 1939 PRIZE - Awarded as a medal to the most distinguished student in the Faculty of Life Sciences.

CARNELLEY PRIZE (£20) - For proficiency in Chemistry.

ROBERT COOK ESSAY PRIZE (£35) - Submissions for the prize will be invited biennially. Any undergraduate of the University shall be eligible to submit an essay, in prose or in verse, on a topic specified by the adjudicators but on the general theme of 'Life, particularly the physico-chemical character of the biosphere in its widest sense'. The adjudicators will be convened by the Head of the Division covering Biochemistry and will include the Symers Professor of Physiology, two members of the academic staff of the Division covering Biochemistry and one member of the academic staff of the Department of English. Essays will be judged on content and literary style. The prize for the winning essay will only be awarded if there are submissions of sufficient merit.

DRUG DEVELOPMENT (SCOTLAND) PRIZE(£150) - Awarded to the most distinguished student in the final year Pharmacology courses (Honours BSc or Honours BMSc).

EDE AND RAVENSCROFT PRIZE (£125) - Awarded at the discretion of the Dean of the Faculty to a continuing undergraduate student on the basis of superior academic performance.

JONATHAN GLOVER PRIZE (£50) - Awarded to the best student in the Third Science classes in Biological Sciences.

IRVINE JUBILEE MEDAL IN CHEMISTRY - Awarded to the most distinguished student of Chemistry.

ORGANON PRIZE (£150) - Awarded to the most distinguished student in the Third Science BSc courses in Pharmacology.

PHYSIOLOGICAL SOCIETY PRIZE (£100) - Awarded to the graduating student who, in the assessment of the examiners, has excelled in the work of the Honours project and dissertation.

PATRICK RITCHIE PRIZE (£40) - Awarded to a meritorious student in the Senior Honours Chemistry class for quality of expression and presentation.

GRAHAM SMITH PRIZE (£100) - Awarded to the best student in the Second Science class in Chemistry.

WAYMOUTH REID PRIZE (£100) - Awarded on the recommendation of the Head of the Department of Anatomy and Physiology, acting on the advice of the examiners in Physiology, to a graduating Honours student who has shown distinction in Physiology or Physiological Sciences.

Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Nursing

Medicine

(This section is currently under review: details given below apply to the old curriculum although the spirit of the award will be maintained where it is at all possible).

Prizes Awarded for Academic Merit:

R.C.ALEXANDER MEMORIAL PRIZE IN SURGERY (£75) - Awarded annually, after the Final Examination in Sugery, to the student with the next highest marks to the winner of the American Medical Graduates' Prize in Surgery.

AMERICAN MEDICAL GRADUATES' PRIZE IN MEMORY OF SIR JAMES IRVINE (Five prizes each of £100) - Awarded annually, one to the best student in Medicine and Therapeutics, one to the best student in Surgery, one to the best student in Child Health and one to the best student in Psychiatry; each in the Final Examination; and one to the student with the highest aggregate of marks in the General Pathology, Pharmacology, Systematic Pathology,

Medical Microbiology and Biochemical Medicine parts of the Second and Third Professional Examinations.

ARTHRITIS AND RHEUMATISM COUNCIL PRIZE IN RHEUMATOLOGY (£100) - Awarded annually to the medical student who, on the basis of a submitted essay, most excels in Rheumatology.

BONNETMAKER CRAFT PRIZE (£15) - Awarded annually to the student who, in the opinion of a panel of three examiners selected by the Head of the Department of General Practice, demonstrates most clearly by his work in a project the grasp of the principles of medical sociology and psychology and their application and relevance to a clinical situation.

HUGH CAMERON AWARD IN SURGERY - Awarded annually to the student who, in the opinion of the Professor of Orthopaedic and Trauma Surgery, is the most deserving and best in Orthopaedic Surgery.

DR R D CAMPBELL MEMORIAL PRIZE (£40) - Awarded annually, at the discretion of the Head of the Department of Biochemical Medicine to the Third year student who performs best in biochemical medicine.

WALTER GORDON CAMPBELL PRIZE IN SURGERY (£75) - Awarded annually, in the form of a travelling scholarship to be used during the period of selected studies in the final year of the Medical Course, on the recommendation of the Head of the Department of Surgery and based on performance in Surgery in the Medical Studies (Part II) part of the fourth professional examination for MB, ChB. Preference is given to a student who displays a particular practical aptitude for Surgery.

PATRICK DOLAN MEMORIAL PRIZE IN ANAESTHETICS - Awarded annually to the student deemed most deserving by the Professor of Anaesthesia.

BARRIE DOW BURSARY (£200 per annum) - Awarded to the student obtaining the highest aggregate of marks in the First, Second and Third Professional examinations. The bursary is tenable for the fourth and fifth years of the medical course.

DAVID RUTHERFORD DOW PRIZE - One or two prizes awarded annually to a medical or dental student who, in addition to attaining academic distinction, makes a notable contribution to research or teaching in the anatomical sciences. The contribution could be an outstanding thesis or published paper (in the case of an Honours BMSc student) or a pro-section, an anatomical model, or poster display. Students will be invited to compete for the prize. The Head of the Department of Anatomy and Physiology will select the prizewinners in consultation with the academic staff and the external examiner (for 1st MB Anatomy or Honours BMSc in Anatomy).

EDE AND RAVENSCROFT PRIZE (£125) - Awarded to either a continuing medical or a dental undergraduate student on the basis of superior academic performance at the discretion of the Dean of the Faculty.

MARGARET FAIRLIE PRIZE IN OBSTETRICS AND GYNAECOLOGY (£50 in books) - Awarded annually to the student with the highest marks in the Fourth Professional Examination in Obstetrics and Gynaecology.

GHOSH PRIZE IN AGEING AND HEALTH - Awarded annually to fourth year students for the best student presentation during the Ageing and Health block.

GOLIGER PRIZE (£50) - Awarded to a Fourth Year medical student, on the recommendation of the Head of the Department of Medicine, advised as may be appropriate by the Heads of the Sections of Communicable Diseases and Respiratory Medicine, on the basis of performance in the assignment that medical students are required to undertake under the terms of MB ChB Regulation 15.

EILEEN AND JOHN GRIEVE PRIZE IN UROLOGY (£7) - Awarded, on the recommendation of the Head of the Section of Urology, for outstanding work in Urology or Nephrology.

JEAN HERRING PRIZE - The income from the trust for this prize is awarded annually to the most distinguished woman student among those graduating MB, ChB.

ICI PHARMACEUTICALS (UK) DIVISION PHARMACOLOGY AND THERAPEUTICS PRIZE (£50) - Awarded each year to the student gaining the highest aggregate marks for all examinations in Pharmacology and Therapeutics.

A K JOHNSTON AWARD (£25) - Awarded annually to the senior medical student whose submitted work on a project on any aspect of General Practice undertaken while under the guidance of the Department of General Practice shows most merit. The Department of General Practice will adjudicate submissions.

JOHN KYNOCH SCHOLARSHIP IN OBSTETRICS (£400) - Awarded annually on completion of the year's preregistration training in hospital, to the student who obtains the highest marks in both Class and Degree Examinations in Obstetrics. The holder of the scholarship should, if possible, attend a recognised maternity hospital, outside the University, for a period of not less than three months.

CAPTAIN W A LOW PRIZE AND MEDAL (£100) - Awarded annually to the most distinguished student among those graduating MB, ChB.

MACEWAN PRIZE IN SURGERY (£15 in books) - Awarded annually on the recommendation of the Professor of Surgery to the student who produces the best Assignment on a surgical topic.

SIR JAMES MACKENZIE PRIZES (Two prizes, each of £100) - Awarded annually, one, after the Final Examination in Medicine and Therapeutics, to the student with the next highest marks to the winner of the American Medical Graduates' Prize in Medicine and Therapeutics and one to the student with the highest marks in the Third Professional Examination in Epidemiology and Public Health.

DR A R MOODIE PRIZE IN OPHTHALMOLOGY (£40) - Awarded annually, at the discretion of the Head of Department, to the student obtaining the best marks in Ophthalmology.

LLOYD TURTON PRICE PRIZE IN SURGERY (£35) - Awarded annually to the student obtaining the highest marks in the Third Professional Examination in Surgery.

ROBERT DAVIES ROYDS MEMORIAL PRIZE (£35) - Awarded annually to the student with the highest aggregate of marks in General Pathology (at end of Second Year), Pathology, Medical Microbiology, and Biochemical Medicine (at end of Third Year) and Medical Studies (l and II).

DR GEORGE H SMITH PRIZE IN HAEMATOLOGY (£100) - Awarded annually to an undergraduate medical student at the discretion of the Head of the Department of Haematology, on the basis of performance in the Final Year Courses in Haematology and practical examinations held earlier in the course.

JOHN DUKE STEWART MEMORIAL PRIZE (£50) - Awarded annually, on the recommendation of the Head of the Department of Anaesthesia, to the student producing the best Assignment in this subject.

GEORGE RANKEN TUDHOPE PRIZE IN PATHOLOGY (£55) - Awarded annually, to the student with the highest aggregate of marks in Pathology in the Second and Third Professional Examinations.

ZENECA PRIZE IN MEDICAL MICROBIOLOGY (£50) - Awarded to the best student in Medical Microbiology.

Other Prizes

FAMUYIWA FUND (£50) - Awarded annually in the later years of study to an undergraduate student from overseas who, in the opinion of the Dean and the Faculty Board, appears to be the most deserving.

HELLER PRIZE (£40) - Awarded annually to a student in the final year of study who, in the opinion of the Dean and the Faculty Board will "make a good all-round doctor".

SHEENA M JUNOR PRIZE (£50) - Awarded annually to the woman graduate who, in the opinion of the Dean and the Faculty Board will make the best all-round doctor, taking into consideration care and compassion for patients as well as academic merit.

Dentistry

The following prizes are awarded annually in the Dental School:

ACADEMY OF DENTAL MATERIALS PRIZE - A wall plaque in recognition of excellence in scholarship in dental materials.

ASTRA ZENECA PRIZE - £500 for the best performance in Pharmacology and £500 for the best local anaesthetics workbook of the year.

BRITISH DENTAL TRADES ASSOCIATION (BDTA) AWARD FOR EXCELLENCE - A medal awarded to the student achieving the best overall grades in the Second Professional Examinations for the degree of BDS.

BRITISH SOCIETY FOR BEHAVIOURAL SCIENCES IN DENTISTRY (SCOTLAND) (£50) - Awarded to the student achieving the highest overall marks in Fourth Year Behavioural Sciences.

BRITISH SOCIETY FOR RESTORATIVE DENTISTRY - A certificate and year's membership of the Society, awarded to the best student in the Integrated Treatment Unit, judged on the basis of continuous assessment and the completed integrated Fifth BDS case.

COTTRELL & CO PRIZE (£25) - Awarded to the best student in Conservative Dentistry.

THE DALL MEDAL - Awarded to the best student in ceramic work.

DENTAL PROTECTION PRIZE - Awarded to recognise a student who in the opinion of the Dean of Dentistry and fellow students has worked hard behind the scenes organising social and educational School events to the benefit of all.

DENTAL PUBLIC HEALTH PRIZE (£100) - Awarded annually to the fourth year student producing the best dental public health project report.

WILLIAM McPHERSON FISHER PRIZE (£50) - Awarded annually to the best student in Oral Pathology.

HITCHIN PRIZE (amount under review) - Awarded annually for the highest aggregate of marks in all subjects in the Fourth and Fifth Professional Examinations for the BDS Degree.

KaVo PRIZE - Awarded on the basis of work in the Integrated Treatment Unit - £25 to the student producing the best case report and £75 to the best overall student in the Unit.

THE JAMES KYDD PRIZE (£100) - Awarded to the best student in dental hospital practice.

DAMIAN E MCCANN ACADEMIC PRIZE - An engraved Tyrone Crystal trophy awarded to the student who in the opinion of the Dental Committee has shown the greatest academic achievement during the preceding academic year.

DAMIAN E MCCANN SPORTS PRIZE - An engraved Tyrone Crystal trophy awarded to the student who in the opinion of the Dental Student Society has shown the greatest sporting achievement during the preceding academic year.

DEPARTMENT OF MEDICINE PRIZE IN CLINICAL MEDICAL SCIENCE (£100) - For the best performance in Clinical Medical Science.

WILLIAM MACKENZIE PRIZES (£35 and £20) - For the best essay reports on studies carried out during the elective period in Late Phase.

ALEXANDER ROBB MECHAN PRIZE (£50) - Awarded to the 'most deserving' student of the year.

MEDICAL AND DENTAL DEFENCE UNION OF SCOTLAND PRIZE IN CONSERVATIVE DENTISTRY - A prize (£100) and medal awarded to a student in any clinical year on the basis of documented case reports involving endodontics and other types of restorative work, as assessed by the Unit.

MEDICAL AND DENTAL DEFENCE UNION OF SCOTLAND LATE PHASE PRIZE - A prize (£100) and certificate for the best student log book and clinical profile in Late Phase.

JOHN STURROCK MEMORIAL PRIZE (£250) - Awarded for what is, in the opinion of the Coordinators of Dental Units, the best report on a dental research project by an undergraduate student. Examples of eligible projects include work towards a BMSc (Hons) degree, elective projects, and vacation research projects.

JOHN STURROCK MEMORIAL PRIZE (£100) - Awarded for the highest aggregate marks in the Fourth Professional Examinations for the BDS degree.

SECOND BDS MEDAL FOR EXCELLENCE - A medal awarded to the student achieving the best overall grades in the Second Professional Examination for the degree of BDS. The student's name is also inscribed on a silver salver presented by the BDTA.

TATTERSALL MEDAL IN DENTAL JURISPRUDENCE - Awarded for the best performance in Dental Jurisprudence.

WRIGHT COTTRELL DENTAL GROUP PRIZE (£30) - Awarded to the best student in Orthodontics.
